Columbia Bound

Tuesday evening we finished packing our bags, picked up the rental car and loaded it to head down to South Carolina for Aunt Lisa and Uncle Michael's graduation from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.

Who knew with an eighteen month old you'd need so much stuff, in addition to our stuff and my parents things we even need to use the Thule so we could ride a little more comfortably.   Wednesday morning we left our driveway about 7:30 am  with an approximate 9 -10 hour drive ahead of us and headed South.  We only had to stop three times, Daddy drove majority of the way, and Mommy finished up the last 3-4 hours.

Sophie surprised us and was perfect, no major meltdowns and she took some good naps along the way, as did Papaw.  The dvd player and Curious George were a blessing.

At about 6:30 pm we arrived at our hotel in Columbia SC.   We had some dinner at the hotel and then about 8pm Michael and Lisa stopped by to see us for a quick visit to hash out what events would be going on the next few days.

Pretty Toes

Last week Sophie saw that I had painted my toe nails one day while she was taking her nap, since just maybe this Ohio weather would allow me to wear my sandals or flip flops.  I asked her if she wanted her toes to be pretty like Mommy's, and she said Yes.  So she sat down in the bathroom and I painted the first five nails without any problems.  Then the second foot I got through three toes..the last two were a bit of a fight, but well worth it.  All week she takes her socks off and says "toes."  Then she leans over and says "mommy toes" and points to my toes.

18 Months

A whole year and a half have flown by and our little girl is definitely not a baby anymore.  She's a toddler.  As many of you know that means she's still sweet but definitely is learning how to be more independent.  With that comes different challenges, and her being a little more defiant, the word "No"  has definitely been said a lot more lately.  We are managing through timeouts and a lot of patience.  Now let me just say she is only challenging 10 % of the time.  The other 90% she is good.  So when she is defiant it seems worse than it really is.
When I took her to the doctor on Thursday she was really good about getting on the scales and weighing in, being measured, and having the doctor check her heart, ears, throat, and abdomen.  I was actually amazed how well she sat still and did not cry...until the shot but I expected that.  However it has now almost been a week and she is still pointing to her leg and saying "Boo Boo."  I keep telling her, her boo boo is all better.  Her stats for 18 months are 24 pounds and 31 3/4 inches tall.  So she is average is what the pediatrician is telling us as far as her size goes for her age.

She really enjoys swinging, sliding, running, hopping, riding in her wagon and jogging stroller.  She loves to chase after her soccer ball and kick it. We have also blown some bubbles and I thought she was going to blow so hard her ears were going to pop, hilarious.  She has drawn with chalk on the sidewalk at the sitter's house several times.  She loves the outdoors so much that the only way to get her to come back in is to trick her by giving her a drink or snack which works great in the afternoon right before nap.  While we are outside she loves to watch the birds fly, the ducks swim, and the dogs on the path.  Along the bike path there are quite a few dandelions that she loves picking and bringing back to the house to put in a little vase.

Other new developments are playing pretend with her baby dolls and her kitchen.  She loves to pretend to wash, change, and feed her baby doll.  She gives them hugs and kisses.  In the kitchen she talks on her little phone and has mini conversations with Grammy, Poppy, Mam Maw, and Pa Paw.  She also serves up Cheese (Mac  N Cheese), Hot dogs, Tea, and Ice Cream.

Her most favorite thing to watch on TV is the Imagination Movers in Concert.  She loves the song Jump Up, and we dance and do the motions with her....which she has gotten really good at.

She now has two friends at the sitter that she talks about daily.  Charlize and Hannah.  We ask her how her morning is and she says "play Hannah, play Charlize".  Also the other day I held on of the baby's while I waited for Sophie to finish her lunch..immediately she was at my feet saying "mommy, baby, down.  In her own little words that meant Mommy put that baby down.  So that was just a glimpse of what kind of reaction we might get if we have another child :)  Although the sitter has said she is a very loving, caring child with the littler babies.

This month's new words and sentences are definitely "up please," "more please," "down please."  So she has picked up on the manners we've been working at teaching her.  She likes to point at Bob and say "my daddy" and she points at me and says "my mommy".  We are now more fluent in saying family members names as well.

She loves climbing up and down the stairs, up on the couch and chairs.  Recently she has discovered laying on her little pillow and wants to be covered up with a blanket so she can relax, and some times at night she wants to be covered up too.  She also seems to be going through another snuggling stage because she loves wrapping her legs around our waists and her arms around our necks for the biggest hug a little girl can give her parents...and we love them and can't get enough of them.

Lastly, we have had several kids CD's in the car and we listen to them over and over again to the point that Bob and I are singing them in our sleep mostly the Laurie Berkner Band..funny thing though Sophie has started singing certain words out of the songs, like "ah ah ah," "la la la," "oh ah oh ah."  I/We honestly have to laugh because it is just too cute in her little voice.

As far as her eating habits go, we are still doing really well with that.  She loves cheese in general...mac n cheese, cheese cut up, cheese crackers and cheese pizza.  She is still a big fan of chicken nuggets, and peanut butter sandwiches.  We still are managing to get almost every fruit you can think of into her, however the veggies are a little more difficult...she likes carrots, peas, and cucumber.  We've tried spaghetti a few times and weekly we are adding more choices to her diet.  Recently she has gotten pretty good at eating with a fork and spoon, but still eats a lot of things with her hands.

Everyday we Thank God for our daughter and no matter how much she challenges us we love her with all of our heart and are truly blessed with the joy she brings to us each day with that little smile, her baby bear hugs, and that little voice that says mommy and daddy.

Christ has Risen..

He has risen indeed!  Alleluia.

Easter morning we arose at 7 am and went out to the living room to see what the Easter bunny had delivered Sophie.  She got a nice basket full of goodies and a big purple bunny.  Then we had a nice breakfast  and got ready for church where Mommy grew up with Grandma and Grandpa.  The church was decorated with all the beautiful flowers and was packed with more people than they usually have in two services at one.  Sophie sat through the entire service and was intrigued with the bells, the choir singing and all the people.

After church we attempted to get some pictures in our Easter clothes.

I'm tired of taking pictures....just let me play with my phone please (in her words "hone pease")

Then Sophie opened her Easter present from Grandma and Grandpa.  She got a bath time baby and a stroller.  She was thrilled.

Later on in the afternoon we did an Easter egg hunt on Gma and Gpa's back screened in porch since it was raining again.  She found 14 eggs and ate 4 jelly beans, as she calls them beans.  Then we played on the back porch with her new baby and stroller.  A good weekend spent with both of our families.  We really are blessed to have the time with them.

A Tisket...A Tasket...

Here comes the boys and Sophie with their Easter baskets.  Saturday Easter weekend we spent the entire day at Aunt Becky and Uncle Eric's house celebrating Easter.  The day started off with a wonderful brunch made by Uncle Eric.
Then we decided to head outside for a walk/run to let all three kids burn off some of their energy.

When we returned we dyed some Easter eggs.  All three kids had a great time.

Then it was nap time for Sophie and Aaron.  The girls took a quick run to the mall, and Austin, Poppy, and Daddy ran to the camera store.  After everyone returned and had awakened from their naps we did an Easter egg hunt in the basement, thanks to the lovely rain we have been having here in Ohio.  The kids all found some candy, some quarters, and Sophie found a few pretty bows for her hair...good thing the boys didn't end up with those.

Then the kids opened their Easter presents from each other.  Sophie got some awesome shades to wear to the beach...

in addition to a couple of cute outfits, a ball, a girly truck, and some chocolate.  The boys got remote control cars, 3D chalk, and some colored bubbles.  We had a wonderful dinner and then we headed North to spend the night at Mamaw and Pa Paw's house.

Egg-citing Times

Friday night when Daddy got home after we ate dinner, we decided it would be fun to dye some Easter eggs with Sophie.  I boiled up some eggs during the afternoon and Sophie watched as we dropped the color tabs into the glasses of water.

While she waited we gave her an egg to hold.
Of course her initial instinct was to put it up to her mouth.
Once the dye was ready to go, we helped her drop her egg into the pink dye.

Then another into the blue dye.  While we waited she played with the Sesame Street stickers.  Then once they dried we gave her stickers to put on the eggs which she did really well with.

We all had a lot of fun, and here is the finished product.

Jello Jigglers

So on Monday I made two pans of jello and when Daddy got home after dinner we had a special dessert activity planned....Jello Jigglers.  We had a heart and a star cookie cutters to cut out the shapes in the jello.

Little did I know the Jello was not quite thick enough...in other words I just made jello the normal way not thinking about it might need less water.  With that being said cutting things out was not really an option...but that did not stop us from having fun.

Sophie just started grabbing fist fulls of jello and started eating it...then she decided it would be fun to feed both Mommy and Daddy.

We had a bit of a mess when we were done...but sometimes you have to be messy in order to have fun...that's what soap and water are for...and baths.

Healthy Ears..

I'm not talking about the Easter Bunny's ears...I'm talking about Sophie's ears.  This winter we have constantly battled ear infections.. four to be exact....not her fault..not ours just the way God made her little ears.  However today I took her back just to have them checked and they are finally free of infection and healthy again.   YEAH!!!  With Spring in the forecast I think we are safe and clear and hopefully she will have grown out of them by the time next winter arrives..which we are definitely not thinking about.    Not to mention the girl that was totally terrified of the doctor weighed in today all by herself..no tears, and she let the doctor listen to her heart and check her ears without any tears.  All in all a miracle, must be that "Elmo goes to the Doctor"book we've been reading her, and the daily weigh in's on our scale.

Stickers and Snugs

Also over the weekend since Mommy had a baby shower to go to on Sunday in her hometown we just drove straight from spending time with Daddy's family straight to Mam Maw and Pa Pa's house to spend the night Saturday.

Since she was still pretty wired she spent about 15-20 minutes putting stickers on a paper and taking them off with Mam Maw.

Then she started to get sleepy and snuggled right in with Grandma before we put her to bed.

Cooking up some Fun

Over the weekend we got up and headed down to Aunt Becky and Uncle Eric's for a day of visiting, playing and eating.  When we arrived we visited for a bit and the kids played and then Aunt Becky and Grammy ran out to get sandwiches.  When they returned we ate lunch and all the kids scarfed their lunches down.  Then back to playing they went.   Sophie spent a good portion of the day playing kitchen in the basement with Aaron, Poppy, Grammy, and Aunt Becky.   Since the boys had outgrown the kitchen for the most part they decided to give it to Sophie so now we have the kitchen in our den and she is cooking up a storm in it.

Mam Maw and Pa Pa

Last weekend we went to see my parents.  Sophie had a blast and played quite a bit with Mommy and Uncle Michael's old toys that Mam Maw cleaned up.  She spent time reading books, and putting stickers on paper and taking them back off with Mam Maw. She also enjoyed a good portion of the day playing ball, watching Lawerence Welk, and watching the birds out the window with Pa Pa.  Fun weekend had by all.
